Orange Juice
Squeeze
The orange juice sector has been struggling with many of the same problems
as fresh and processed apples, flat or declining consumption, weak prices,
unfavorable dietary trends and battles over promotional methods. The success
of the different approaches it uses in overcoming its problems may carry a
number of lessons for the apple industry. For example, while many major marketers
of orange juice brands are seeking to adapt their product to meet the low-carb
critics, the Florida Citrus Commission is tenaciously promoting the healthfulness
of traditional orange juice.
WTO Rescues Doha Round
In the last week of July, World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiators worked
out a compromise that will allow the current round of free trade talks (dubbed
the Doha Round) to continue. A key to progress was an agricultural proposal
developed initially by Australia, Brazil, the EU, India and the United States
and sold to many other reluctant participants. The compromise was as much
the result of fear that without an agreement the whole WTO system would be
threatened as of belief that a resolution of the agricultural stalemate is
in sight.
The Labeling Dilemma
Almost every week, demand arises from some interest group for additional mandatory
information to be included on food labels. This article traces the evolution
of the major types of labeling information being promoted. It discusses the
inherent conflicts over space, intent, translation, consumer comprehension
and information overload. It argues that critical information can be brought
to consumers more effectively and selectively by use of new electronic and
information technologies.
