China's
Spectacular Export Success
China has been spectacularly successful in expanding its exports of fresh
apples and concentrated apple juice (CAJ). This article shows how Chinese
fresh apples continue to penetrate every major region of the world. China's
CAJ exports have had more mixed success, being most effective in richer countries.
While price has played a major role in the expansion, China has also shown
the ability to match quality to the requirements of different markets. This
article examines the potential for the expansion to continue.
Spain Searches for Direction
The Spanish apple industry has performed poorly in terms of acreage, yield
and production compared to major European rivals such as France and Italy.
In addition, the volume of imports has soared ahead of increases in exports.
Per capita consumption of fresh apples has been declining. The industry remains
heavily dependent on the Golden Delicious and Red Delicious varieties. Unless
Spain finds solutions to its many problems, its apple industry can expect
further shrinkage in the next decade.
Do High Produce Prices Stimulate Obesity?
A recent study by the Rand Corporation found that kids tend to be more obese
in areas where fruit and vegetables are more expensive. The USDA, sponsor
of the study, has not been willing to accept this conclusion, since they believe
that low consumption is related to lack of nutritional knowledge. However,
other studies have found that consumption of fruits and vegetables is sensitive
to prices and incomes. The outcome of this debate is not just academic. It
has major implications for the direction of future nutritional policy.
