2007, World Apple Report Highlights
Organic Cant
This article argues that the organic movement made important contributions
to agriculture's relationship with the environment in the 1970s, but that,
under the influence of zealots, it has now become a vehicle for manipulation
of consumers, and an obstacle to good agricultural science, sound agricultural
business practices and sensible food policies. Policymakers, opinion leaders
and retailers need to re-examine the realities of organic agriculture and
to rethink the implications for society and consumers.
Some Factors in Choosing New Varieties
This article provides a theoretical framework for making choices between alternative
new varieties that vary on two criteria, (1) the uniqueness of the features
they possess and (2) the level of intellectual property protection they enjoy.
Using sample data, the article shows some of the trade-offs in volume of production,
price, cost and net income that might occur for different combinations of
these features. Before adopting a new variety, producers need to establish
where in the continuum that variety may lie.
Wrestling with Bugs
The fall-out from last winter's E-coli outbreak on fresh spinach in the United
States continues to be felt. While the exact cause of the outbreak has not
been identified, California suppliers of leafy green vegetables have signed
on to new protocols that they will follow. A research effort at the University
of California, Davis has been given additional public and private resources
to solve the mystery of E-coli sources, transmission methods and effective
control measures. Finding control measures that are economical and practical
in every day farming may be extremely difficult.
