New Wrinkles
in Demand
In the February 2003 issue of the World Apple Report, long-term
trends and external shocks that affected demand were discussed. This article
discusses many other wrinkles in demand that have occurred because of subtle
changes in the tactics of major retailers. Among the practices discussed are
the stocking of more varieties, uniform pricing, mixing supplier lots, seeking
standards above government grades, contract pricing and category management.
Need to Boost Apple
Exports
Special forecasts prepared for the World Apple Report suggest that the major
apple producing countries will in the next few years increase their export
capacity more rapidly than they increase their fresh apple imports. This suggests
a need to boost apple exports to third countries if prices are not to come
under further pressure. Steps the apple industry could take to remedy the
situation are discussed.
China to Dominate
future of CAJ
Special forecasts prepared by the World Apple Report expect the availability
of apples for processing to increase between now and 2010. Production and
exports of concentrated apple juice (CAJ) will also rise faster than CAJ imports.
Supply pressure will come from China, Eastern Europe and the Southern Hemisphere,
with China having the fastest growth.
