2001:
Rededication to Consumers
The first New Year resolution for the apple industry needs to be to rededicate
itself to serving the consumer better. Because retailer demands on suppliers
have become so taxing, it is easy to forget that retailers survive by serving
consumers. Suppliers must also provide retailers with the sorts of products
that different segments of consumers want. The continuing fractionation of
consumer tastes makes this a challenge, but one that must be faced.
Biggest Stories of 2005
This article discusses the top ten stories of 2005 that are likely to have
most impact on the future apple industry. Among the key stories discussed
are (1) Consumers still changing, still incorrigible, (2) Retail Shakeup Continues,
(3) Variety Preferences in Flux, (4) Agricultural Trade Initiatives Flounder,
(5) Marketers' Oversupply Nightmare and (6) Intensive Restructuring of the
Apple Industry.
China's Regional
Trade Agreements
China has been gradually expanding its network of regional trade agreements.
These include Closer Economic Partnership Arrangements (CEPAs) with Hong Kong
and Macao, Free Trade Agreements with Southeast Asian member countries of
ASEAN, framework agreements with Australia and New Zealand and potential agreements
with India, Chile, South Africa, the Gulf Cooperation Council, Japan and South
Korea. China's network will soon rival those of the United States and the
European Union. Like them, China may use limited free trade agreements as
an alternative to multilateral treaties such as the WTO, thus reducing its
dependence on multilateral checks and balances.
