Mexico Harvests Bitter
Fruit
There is widespread unhappiness in Mexican agriculture with the outcome of
the first ten years of operation of the North American Free Trade Agreement
(NAFTA). This contrasts with the experience in many other Mexican sectors
which have flourished under NAFTA. So far, the Mexican government has resisted
calls for the agricultural sections of NAFTA to be renegotiated. However,
there are likely to be further efforts to modify the impact of free trade
on the Mexican rural economy.
