World Apple Production Trends
to 2015
This article attempts to peer ten years into the future to see how the world
apple industry will develop if present trends continue. Global production
is expected to increase 23 percent between 2005 and 2015, with Chinese production
increasing by 36 percent. The top ten varieties in 2015 will still account
for 75 percent of world apple production outside China. The only change in
the top ten rankings will be the replacement of Jonathan by Cripps Pink/ Pink
Lady®. Golden Delicious and Red Delicious will continue to be the leading
varieties, although their market share will continue to fall. The article
contains many other key forecasts of apple production by variety and region.
Hard Discounter Clout in France
A recent study by the French Ministry of Agriculture shows the growth of the
influence of Hard Discounters on purchases of fresh produce, including fresh
apples. Between 1997 and 2004, the volume of fresh fruit sold in hard discount
stores rose by 112%, while the volume fell in competing store types. Purchases
of fresh apples from hard discounters rose by 169%. Hard discounters have
made substantial gains in the share of shoppers frequenting their stores,
in the average volume of fresh produce purchased and in the average price.
They have enjoyed increases among all age groups and income levels, although
penetration has been greatest among low and lower middle income households.
Costs of Corruption
In 2005, Transparency International surveyed 60,000 consumers in 69 countries
about their perceptions of corruption in their country. On a scale of 1 to
5, where 1 equals not at all corrupt and 5 equals extremely corrupt, political
parties were seen as most corrupt across all countries. Parliaments, police,
legal systems and business all were ranked poorly. Only 11 percent believed
that corruption had decreased in the past three years. Corruption was found
not just in poorer countries that are normally considered dysfunctional, but
in advanced countries in Europe, North America and Asia.
