Information for Optimal Internal
Efficiency
This is the second article in a series that looked
at information needs in the apple business. Internal efficiency is defined
as getting the most possible "desirable output" from the least possible
input. The consumer ultimately decides what is desirable. The article looks
at the special problems in efficiency involved in perennial crop production.
In measuring efficiency, key decisions need to be made on (a) what to measure,
(b) what methods of measurement to use, (c) how to organize the recorded measures
for ease of analysis and (d) what methods of analysis to use. Many sources
of information and areas of knowledge can be tapped to promote efficiency.
World Apple Production and Variety
Trends, 2000-2010
This article examines past and expected trends
in total world apple production and in individual varieties in the first decade
of the twenty-first century. Production is still expected to increase almost
20 percent in the decade. The Fuji variety will continue to be the most widely
produced variety in the world, largely because of the tremendous production
in China. Excluding China, Golden Delicious and Red Delicious will remain
the world's top two varieties by 2010. The rate of growth in production of
Gala, Fuji, Braeburn and Cripps Pink will slow down in the second half of
the decade. Many minor, regional varieties will continue to account for a
combined 30 percent of total apple production outside China.
Consumers Deaf to Health Advice
A continuous flow
of advice from health professionals and opinion leaders has supported increased
consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. However, the public response to
such advice has been apathetic. A recent University College London study that
tracked baby boomers for a decade found that their appetite for greasy foods
had grown while their consumption of fruits and vegetables had not. In addition,
their participation in exercise was "strikingly low." Clearly, exhortations
to eat or live better are not enough to alter ingrained habits and preferences.
