2006, World Apple Report Highlights
Choosing Improvements
This article argues that, to be successful, apple operations need to have
a systematic process for learning about new approaches and technologies that
can be applied to different parts of their business. Especially at winter
meetings, top scientists and operators explain their latest knowledge and
insights. Growers need to know what activities are most critical to their
business, what costs are involved and what are the odds of successful application.
They need a strategy for learning about new breakthroughs and following up
with the relevant experts to apply the new knowledge correctly.
Privatization of Public Research
Many countries have been moving to privatize agricultural research for both
philosophical reasons (they feel it is more appropriate for industries to
pay their own way) and for economy reasons, to save public funds. Some argue
that the public should fund basic research and industry should fund applied
research. This article argues that such distinctions ignore the complex way
in which modern science advances. They ignore the breadth, depth and continuity
that is necessary for research institutions to be effective. There is a role
for both public funders (governments) and private funders. Too much privatization
could severely damage the long-term capabilities of horticultural research
institutions.
Retailing Revolution Takes New Spin
Several years ago, it appeared that the retail food business would soon be
completely dominated by a few, large multinational retailers with giant outlets.
However, it is clear that many smaller companies are successfully fighting
back by focusing their operations on lucrative niches in the market. Convenience
stores, dollar stores, specialty stores, limited assortment discounters and
gourmet markets are just some of the categories that have been holding their
own. Companies such as Wal-Mart and Tesco have been expanding their own small
store outlets. Diversity is alive and buoyant in the food retailing sector.
