Sweet Cherry Review
2009 Edition
The
2009 edition of the World Sweet Cherry Review is being published at a crucial
juncture for the sweet cherry industry. It
contains a wealth of information needed to understand what happened to sweet
cherry markets in 2009 and what might be done to deal with such a situation
in the future. How much did surging production in 2009 contribute to quality
and price problems? What was the effect of the global recession on sweet cherry
markets? Could more advertising have helped? Was 2009 an aberration or a harbinger
of seasons to come? Has the era of rising production and rising prices come
to an end?
Looking forward, will the world sweet cherry crop (now about 2 million metric tons) reach 3 million metric tons within the next decade? How will that affect increased export availability of fresh and processed sweet cherries? What will be the continuing role of the big four exporters, Turkey, United States, Spain and Chile? What will be the effect of production increases from a revitalized Eastern Europe, from new Mediterranean suppliers, or from expansion-minded Southern Hemisphere suppliers? Which suppliers can gain an edge in competitiveness? Will Russia make a comeback as a major buyer? Will China become a major player in exports? What can be done about lagging consumption in countries, such as the United States, Japan, China, India and Brazil, that have large populations or rising incomes?
In 2008 and 2009, consumers shopped less frequently, bought less volume and sought price discounts. Have consumers permanently changed their purchase habits? If not, what will persuade them to again become more indulgent? What strategies are needed to get more consumers world wide to consume sweet cherries? Where will the best export markets be? What obstacles to exports still remain? Are new varieties the solution to what ails the sweet cherry industry, or are they a necessary, but not sufficient, element of success?
The 2009 edition contains much previously unpublished data and analyses right through the 2009 sweet cherry season. Just some of the features:
These are ideal aids for developing firm strategies or for presentations to employees, managers, growers, boards of directors, bankers, investors, etc.
